British teachers’ declining job quality: evidence from the Skills and Employment Survey

I analyse trends in teachers’ job quality Britain, using the framework of European Foundation for Living and Working Conditions, with data from British Skills Employment Survey. The issue increasing concern is not work hours, which have remained long but stable; rather, teachers are working considerably more intensively than earlier years. Moreover, their task discretion, participation organisation training declined. Their time has also become less flexible. While chances promotion increased since 1992, wages fell after 2006. Three indicators work-related well-being – Warr’s scales Enthusiasm Contentment, frequency end-of-day exhaustion worsened changes account part well-being. Poor potentially important understanding problem declining teacher retention.
